Ely A. GARFINKEL 1846-1911

This is the Ely A. GARFINKEL Branch of our GARFINKEL ancestors who descended from Moshka GURFINKEL. Moshka born about 1790 in the Russian Empire, called The Pale of Settlement.  The area has had many names.  Today it is located in Moldova. The family probably lived in the Kiev area and then, as farmer colonists, moved to the town of Lyublin.  Read about the Moshka’s family history and his descendants who included Ely:  GURFINKEL 1790 Descendants

Ely A. Garfinkel (Henry, Elijah, Eli, Earl) had a City Directory occupation of women’s pantaloons.  See entries below in the 1909 & 1911 Philadelphia City Directories (above).  The 1911 entry lists his home address the same as on his death certificate (442 Emily).  The 1911 entry verifies the 1909 directory entry which has another home address (533 McKean).  My guess is that he worked from home in 1909, prospered enough to move to 442 Emily St. and open a store at 38 N. 4th St.  And recall that he died September 1911.

In 1910, William GARFINKLE who was Ely’s son, also lived at 442 Emily St.  According to the census, this was a single family home.  William was not a nice person.  Wonder if his actions hastened Ely’s demise!

But he apparently got away with the crime.

Some background on William:  He was arrested in 1900 for arson.  Went to a mental hospital ‘for a time’ and in 1902 was tried and sentenced to 5 years in prison.  He was released ‘By Commutation’ May 22, 1904.  Commutation is probably for Good Behavior.
